ASAM applauds the election of Ilse R. Levin, DO, MPH & TM, FACP to the AMA Board of Trustees.
Rockville, MD (June 8, 2020) – The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) applauds the election of Maryland internist, Ilse R. Levin, DO, MPH &TM, FACP to the American Medical Association (AMA) Board of Trustees.
Since 2011 she has served intermittently as, and is currently, an Ex-Officio member on the ASAM Board of Directors.
Dr. Levin is a board-certified internist and epidemiologist with deep roots in organized medicine, beginning in medical school. "As a medical student in California, I witnessed how organized medicine could shape how we practice medicine and improve patient care," Dr. Levin said. "As the current pandemic has shown, physician leadership is needed - from the community level to the national level. The AMA is ideally positioned to provide that leadership."
“ASAM congratulates Dr. Levin on her election to the AMA Board of Trustees. We look forward to the positive impact her leadership and perspective will have on the profession and, specifically, increasing patient access to evidence-based addiction treatment throughout the medical system,” said Paul H. Earley, MD, DFASAM, president of ASAM. “As the nation continues to grapple with the devasting challenges of addiction, it is essential to destigmatize the illness and integrate addiction care into organized medicine. This treatable illness that plagues ten percent of Americans deserves a substantive medical infrastructure that is similar to all other illnesses.”
In addition to her role with ASAM, she holds leadership positions at the AMA and the National Commission on Correctional Healthcare. The AMA Foundation has recognized Dr. Levin's advocacy work with a Leadership Award; she is currently president of the AMA's Forum for Medical Affairs. She has been the AMA representative to the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the CDC's National Advisory Council for the Elimination of Tuberculosis.
