​ASAM Announces Partnership with ACOG to Provide Waiver Qualifying Course on Treatment for Opioid Use Disorders

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) proudly announces a collaboration with the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) to deliver the waiver qualifying ASAM Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder Course, a training with an obstetrics and gynecology focus. Twenty-six of these courses will be held nationwide through mid-2020. These courses will be made available in part by a CDC Cooperative Agreement that is “strengthening services for pregnant and postpartum women through public health clinical care partnerships.” 

This ASAM and ACOG collaboration builds on a long-standing, successful partnership that ensures that obstetrician–gynecologists have the training necessary to recognize, screen for, and treat addiction in their practices.

This course covers all medications and treatments for opioid use disorder and provides the required education needed to obtain the waiver to prescribe buprenorphine. The blended course format includes four hours of self-paced online learning and four hours of live, in-person learning. Participants are expected to complete the first online learning portion of the course before attending the live portion. This blended training satisfies the eight hours of education required for providers to qualify for a Drug Enforcement Agency DATA2000 waiver.

Nurse practitioners and physician assistants can qualify for the waiver after completing an additional 16 hours training provided by ASAM free of charge.
