ASAM Supports Medicaid Bump Act of 2024 with Mental Health Liaison Group

ASAM signed a letter spearheaded by Mental Health Liaison Group, sent to U.S. Senators Tina Smith and Debbie Stabenow, and U.S. Representatives Paul Tonko, Brian Fitzpatrick, and David Trone, urging support of the Medicaid Bump Act of 2024 (H.R. 4892/S. 3921). This legislation would incentivize states to expand coverage of mental health and substance use disorder (MH/SUD) services by providing a corresponding increase in the Federal Medical Assistance Percentage (FMAP) matching rate to 90 percent. Such a change would address many state Medicaid programs' less than ideal MH/SUD services coverage by providing a meaningful incentive for providers to offer MH/SUD services. Medicaid is the single largest payor of MH/SUD services for adults and children, however, beneficiaries face long wait times to accessing such services, including for crises, due to widespread provider shortages.
