ILSAM Supports Legislation Increasing Protections for Pregnant and Parenting People With SUD
On March 5th, the Illinois Society of Addiction Medicine (ILSAM) sent a letter of support for HB 5041/SB 3136. This legislation would take steps to remove punitive policies impacting pregnant and parenting people with substance use disorder (SUD).
In the letter, ILSAM voiced support for provisions of HB 5041/SB 3136 that reverse the punitive approach taken to substance use and SUD during and after pregnancy and promote evidence-based care. Further, ILSAM praised reforms in this legislation that would guide the creation of family recovery plans of care. Family care plans help coordinate supportive services for pregnant, peripartum, postpartum people and families to help newborns and children in fostering treatment and safety. In turn, ILSAM expressing willingness to assist with the implementation of these plans.
