ASAM Supports Legislation Assisting Medicaid and CHIP Enrollees To Quit Using Tobacco
With a broad coalition, ASAM signed a letter supporting the Helping Tobacco Users Quit Act (H.R. 4775), sent on September 28th to its sponsors, U.S. House Representatives Blunt Rochester and Fitzpatrick. The legislation would ensure Medicaid and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) enrollees have access to all evidence-based tobacco cessation treatments, including seven Food and Drug Administration-approved medications. The latter is particularly important as state Medicaid plans provide coverage for a higher proportion of people who smoke, but is inconsistent across states and may include limitations like requirements of enrollees for cost-sharing or prior authorization.
