ASAM Joins Letter to FDA Supporting Reduced Nicotine in Cigarettes
On September 12th, ASAM joined a coalition of public health, medical, and professional organizations in a letter to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), supporting its intention to issue a proposed rule to reduce the nicotine level in cigarettes to non-addictive or minimally addictive levels. Such a reduction of the nicotine content in cigarettes can prevent youth experimentation from becoming tobacco addiction, and thus, prevent tobacco-caused disease. Furthermore, it can reduce the level of nicotine dependence in adults who smoke, which may make it easier for them to quit smoking.
