CONTINUUM Re-Entry Interview Script Enhancement (RISE)

Overview

ASAM developed the Re-Entry Interview Script Enhancement (RISE) for the CONTINUUM software to better assist programs that work with patient populations being released from controlled environments, i.e., correctional, medical, psychiatric, and other systems. The questions in the RISE version reframe the standard CONTINUUM items to refer to the patient’s time in the controlled environment, prior patterns of use, or anticipated experiences upon release. CONTINUUM’s underlying algorithm operates the same across the standard and RISE assessments.

Initiating a RISE Assessment

Choosing any of the provided options (excluding not in any controlled environment) will trigger the RISE pop-up question that will ask the interviewer if they want to switch to the RISE version.

Clicking “YES” will also commit the user to the RISE assessment for the duration of the interview. If users select “yes” by mistake, they will need to return to the patient’s profile and begin a new assessment. Note that previously submitted assessments can still be pulled forward into a new RISE assessment so as not to lose data collected.

Sample RISE Items by Section

Drug & Alcohol

Within the Drug and Alcohol section, the RISE prompts the patient to discuss substances that may have been used during and prior to their time in the controlled environment.

To accommodate this, instead of framing the questions within the past 30 days, the RISE version queries a period of time of regular use and whether they anticipate continued use upon release. The intention is to consider the patient’s experiences with a particular substance even if they have not used that substance while in the controlled environment. Notice that the questions on the right are in the past tense to capture information about use prior to the controlled environment.

Family & Social History

In the RISE version of the Family and Social History, the example has been rephrased to collect information about re-entry, so the interviewer asks the patient about potential conflicts AFTER reentry.

Employment & Support History

In the Employment and Support section, the RISE questions query anticipated circumstances or plans and the patient’s thoughts about its impact.

Psychological History

In the psychological history section, both questions have been rephrased to account for time spent in a controlled environment.

For the second question, there are two options allowing the interviewer to select based on the timing of the interview.

Appropriate Use of RISE Assessments

The RISE assessment is designed to reframe assessment questions and determine addiction treatment needs for patients being released from:

  1. A penal system in the next 6 months
  2. A 24-hour residential treatment program, e.g., Level 3.5 or Level 3.7
  3. A medical and/or psychiatric inpatient program
  4. Other controlled environments
