ASAM Illuminates Ethics in the Practice of Addiction Medicine in New Policy Statement

Addiction specialist physicians (ASPs) face tough ethical dilemmas in the daily practice of addiction medicine. ASAM's new Public Policy Statement on Medical Ethics in Addiction Medicine takes a fresh and probing look at such contemporary quandaries, including in drug testing, in addiction treatment. Using the American Medical Association's Principles and Code of Medical Ethics as a platform, the statement offers recommendations that are applicable to ASPs practicing across health care systems and settings, and for whom it is vital to acknowledge the ethical dilemmas that can occur in clinical practice, and to consider and employ ethical practices when treating patients with addiction.
